Arco da Vila a neo-classical archway and entrance to the historic quarter of the city, which we visited in the morning light of a spring day. The arch was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt from the design of the Italian (Genoese) architect Francisco Xavier Fabri. It was inaugurated in 1812 and the statue set above the entrance is of St Thomas Aquinas, a 13th century Italian religious scholar.
